On a chilly and damp winter day, a cozy country pub exudes a warm and inviting atmosphere. The allure of this charming pub in a quaint Vale of Glamorgan village stemmed from its stellar food reputation, my frequent bike rides past it, and, most significantly, its ownership by a renowned sports figure. Two decades ago, Gavin Henson made history with a remarkable kick that changed the course of Welsh rugby, catapulting him into the limelight alongside singer Charlotte Church as one of Wales’ celebrated duos.
Despite his celebrity status, Henson’s dedication to his craft and unique persona endeared him to fans. While he once embraced the glitz and glam of fame, Henson now leads a more private life in St Brides Major, where he and his wife, Katie, took over The Fox pub in 2019. Following a recent renovation, the pub reopened in early 2020, receiving accolades for its cuisine and welcoming ambiance, with Henson himself actively involved in serving patrons.
Stepping into The Fox, one is greeted with a blend of homeliness and sophistication, characterized by flagstone flooring, elegant Christmas decorations, and a welcoming ambiance. The menu offers a concise selection of delectable dishes, ranging from crispy ham hock to succulent roast meats paired with classic accompaniments. The pub’s affordable pricing, coupled with its cozy atmosphere, makes it a delightful dining destination for locals and visitors alike.
As we savored our meals and beverages, the total bill for two starters, two mains, two kids’ meals, drinks, and juice came to a reasonable £91. The quality of the food, coupled with the inviting setting, left a lasting impression, echoed by fellow diners expressing their intent to return. The enduring charm of The Fox, under Henson’s subtle stewardship, embodies a perfect blend of culinary excellence and warm hospitality, making it a must-visit destination for those seeking a memorable dining experience.
