Virgin Media O2 users are being warned about a dangerous new scam that is on the rise. The telecommunications company has issued an alert after noticing a significant increase in fake call center numbers being distributed by artificial intelligence (AI).
Millions of individuals may have already fallen victim to calling these deceptive numbers that lead them to cybercriminals attempting to steal personal information, such as banking details, as per the company’s statement.
It is estimated that approximately 13% of UK consumers have encountered bogus customer service numbers through search engines or AI tools, posing a serious threat to unsuspecting individuals.
Virgin Media clarified that criminals are leveraging AI-powered tools to display counterfeit phone numbers, websites, and search results to deceive consumers seeking to contact reputable brands, enabling them to harvest data and commit fraudulent activities.
With many people now relying on AI-generated results for information instead of traditional web pages, hackers have found an ideal avenue to carry out their illicit schemes.
To safeguard against such scams, Virgin emphasizes the importance of using only authentic service numbers provided on official company websites, apps, or bills. For O2 inquiries, calling 202 from an O2 device and dialing 150 from a landline for Virgin Media are recommended routes.
Furthermore, caution is advised when dealing with numbers suggested by search engines, social media posts, or AI tools. It is crucial never to disclose security codes or personal information to unsolicited callers, regardless of their claimed identity.
Murray Mackenzie, Director of Fraud Prevention at Virgin Media O2, highlighted the vulnerability of individuals seeking quick assistance, noting the risks posed by AI tools in generating realistic-looking fake numbers through search results or chatbots.
Virgin Media O2 is actively combatting these fraudulent activities by blocking known scammer numbers on the network and using AI to flag over a billion suspicious calls to date. The public is urged to report suspicious numbers to 7726 to expedite the shutdown of scams.
By remaining vigilant and proactive in reporting suspicious activities, everyone can contribute to enhancing online safety and thwarting fraudsters seeking to exploit unsuspecting victims.
