“Virgin Media Warns: Weather Impact on Broadband Speeds”

Must Read

Virgin Media has issued new guidelines to ensure consistent internet speeds throughout the year. While common tips like keeping the router centrally located, restarting it monthly, and avoiding signal interferences such as fish tanks are well-known, the impact of weather changes on broadband performance is often overlooked.

As temperatures climb in late spring and summer, routers face increased strain, necessitating cool and well-ventilated placement.

Virgin Media explained how warmer weather can affect broadband in a recent blog post, stating, “Hot weather can stress broadband equipment, both indoors and outdoors.

“While external equipment can handle high temperatures, indoor routers may struggle in excessive heat.

“Routers require proper airflow for optimal performance. If the router is obstructed behind furniture, in a cupboard, near a radiator, or exposed to direct sunlight, heat accumulation can lead to slower speeds, dropped connections, or automatic restarts to cool down.”

To maintain performance during warm weather, it is advised to relocate the router to a cooler spot. While hot weather may impact performance, other weather conditions are less likely to disrupt internet usage.

Virgin Media emphasized, “Most weather-related broadband issues originate within the home.

“Factors like thick walls, excessive devices, and poor router placement have a greater daily impact on connections than external weather conditions.”

For optimal Wi-Fi performance, position the router centrally, away from direct sunlight, and avoid placing it behind large metal objects or furniture.

After severe weather, ensure cables are secure and undamaged. Additionally, minimize interference by limiting the number of connected devices simultaneously.
