Elena Rybakina faced backlash from tennis legend Pam Shriver for her decision not to pose with a WTA official after winning the WTA Finals in Saudi Arabia and claiming a £4 million prize. While Rybakina took photos with other officials during the ceremony, she notably avoided being photographed with WTA CEO Portia Archer, sparking some tension.
This move was seen as a protest against the ban imposed on her coach, Stefano Vukov, for breaching the WTA’s code of conduct. Questions have long been raised about Vukov’s behavior towards Rybakina, who he coached to a Wimbledon victory. Despite the suspension, Vukov later appealed successfully and resumed his coaching role.
Rybakina expressed her satisfaction with Vukov’s return, denying any mistreatment and asserting a positive working relationship. Shriver criticized Rybakina on social media for snubbing Archer, highlighting the financial success of modern players compared to past pioneers like the Original Nine. Shriver also expressed concern about Rybakina’s decision to work with Vukov again.
During a press conference, Rybakina remained cryptic about her actions but criticized the WTA for inadequate communication regarding Vukov. She focused on her tournament triumph, describing it as unexpected and praising the tough competition she faced.
Meanwhile, Aryna Sabalenka, despite a successful season with major tournament performances, including a US Open win, expressed disappointment at not clinching a Finals victory. Sabalenka acknowledged her opponent’s dominance on the court and reflected on her own emotional response to the defeat.
