Fire TV Stick users are advised to exercise caution, particularly when adding new applications to their devices. A popular tool known as “Downloader” has been removed from Amazon’s Appstore, creating an opportunity for a fraudulent copycat app aimed at swindling users’ money.
The issue arose recently when Downloader vanished from Amazon’s online marketplace, where it had been available for almost a decade. This tool enabled Fire TV owners to search for and install apps not found in official stores, offering a way to access additional tools or unreleased software versions.
Despite its widespread use, Downloader faced a temporary suspension due to a recent update that classified it as a full web browser. Amazon prohibits third-party browsers on Fire TV devices, leading to the app’s removal as explained by its developer Elias Saba.
Saba, who manages the Fire TV site AFTVnews, clarified that the app’s identification as a browser triggered the problem, not its core functionality. He has released an update to address this issue and is hopeful that Amazon will reinstate the app in the Appstore shortly.
During this downtime, users are cautioned against a fake version of Downloader that is attempting to deceive Fire TV owners into unauthorized payments. Saba warns against installing this scam app and advises users to report it to Amazon.
For those with the legitimate Downloader already installed, it is recommended not to uninstall it as reinstallation will not be possible until Amazon resolves the situation. Additionally, users should disable the Auto Offload feature to prevent automatic removal of the app.
Pending Amazon’s approval, Downloader may become available on Fire TV devices again in the coming days, although users are advised to stay vigilant for updates on the situation.
