“Media Mogul Buried Alive in Botched Kidnapping”

Must Read

A prominent media figure met a tragic end when he was maliciously buried alive in a 6-foot container during a botched kidnapping incident.

Stephen Small, a well-known businessman from a prestigious lineage, fell victim to a kidnapping scheme orchestrated by a local drug dealer named Danny Edwards. Edwards aimed to extort a ransom of $1 million by seizing Small, who hailed from a wealthy family background with ties to broadcasting and publishing ventures.

Originally intending to detain Small in rural Chicago until the ransom was paid, the plan took a disastrous turn. Edwards, posing as a police officer, lured Small into his trap on September 2, 1987, and contacted Small’s wife to demand the ransom. Despite multiple ransom calls, Small’s family struggled to comprehend the instructions provided by the kidnappers.

In a desperate move, Edwards buried Small in a small box in a forest in Kankakee, Illinois, equipped with minimal provisions to sustain life. Coercing his terrified accomplice, Nancy Rish, into aiding him, Edwards subjected her to domestic abuse and threats to ensure her compliance.

Following the tragic incident, Rish, who endured abuse and manipulation from Edwards, finally found legal relief in 2022 due to changes in legislation related to victims of intimate partner violence. Edwards initially faced a death sentence for Small’s murder, which was later commuted to life imprisonment.

Rish’s defense team successfully argued for a reduced sentence in light of her coerced involvement in the crime, emphasizing the long-term impact of domestic violence on her life decisions. Eventually, Rish’s 1988 sentences for murder and kidnapping were concurrently reduced by 50% following a court order, with the Small family not opposing the decision.

Released in February 2022 with a three-year parole term, Rish expressed remorse for her role in the tragic event and sought redemption for her actions.
