David Beckham, the former England captain and successful businessman, recently revealed his ultimate meal choice, which may not appeal to everyone. In a special edition of Country Life magazine, where he took on the role of guest editor, Beckham discussed his favorite countryside views and his strong connection to rural Britain.
During an interview with food writer Tom Parker Bowles, Beckham expressed his love for a traditional British comfort dish that holds sentimental value for him. He shared that mashed potato, liver, bacon, and plenty of gravy remind him of cherished moments with his family, particularly his mum and grandad. Additionally, he fondly recalled visits to a pie and mash shop in Chapel Market with his gran, mentioning that if he had to pick his last meal, it would consist of pie, mash, liquor, and jellied eels.
Jellied eels, a classic English dish known for its unique preparation involving boiling eels in a seasoned stock until they set into a cold jelly, have a polarizing reputation due to their salty taste and gelatinous texture.
As part of his guest editor role for Country Life, Beckham praised director Guy Ritchie for igniting his passion for the countryside. Reflecting on his childhood experiences in nature, Beckham credited Ritchie for deepening his appreciation for rural life through shared moments around a campfire discussing their mutual love for the outdoors.
Beckham, who is married to Victoria Beckham and resides with her in the Cotswolds, shared a heartwarming anecdote about preparing their home for Victoria’s first visit, highlighting the emotional moment when she saw the renovated barns for the first time.
The special edition of Country Life featuring Beckham’s guest editing will be available from October 22 to October 28. Editor-in-chief Mark Hedges commended Beckham for his exceptional contribution, emphasizing his profound understanding and passion for the countryside, making the issue a valuable collector’s item.
