“Global Leaders Gather for Gaza Peace Summit”

Must Read

The upcoming Gaza peace summit is viewed as a critical step in bringing an end to the longstanding conflict and violence in the region, as stated by Keir Starmer. Prime Minister, along with US President Donald Trump, is set to participate in the peace plan signing ceremony in Sharm El-Sheikh. The event is expected to be attended by other prominent leaders such as Egypt’s President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi, UN Secretary General António Guterres, and French President Emmanuel Macron.

Starmer emphasized the importance of seizing the opportunity to establish a lasting peace and ensure a secure future for the entire region. The UK pledges its support for the forthcoming negotiations to ensure the comprehensive implementation of the peace plan, facilitating the rebuilding of lives with safety and security for all affected parties.

During the summit, Starmer is expected to unveil a £20 million UK aid package, part of a larger £116 million commitment, dedicated to assisting Gaza. This financial support aims to provide essential water, sanitation, and hygiene services to tens of thousands of civilians residing in the conflict-ridden area.

Yvette Cooper highlighted the collaborative efforts of the UK and its international partners in generating the momentum that led to President Trump’s peace initiative. However, she stressed the pressing need for urgent action in Gaza’s reconstruction, where approximately 92% of homes have been damaged or destroyed during Israeli attacks, resulting in the loss of over 67,000 lives in Gaza over the past two years.

Education Secretary Bridget Phillipson noted the UK’s significant behind-the-scenes involvement in the peace process and emphasized that Hamas would not have a role in Gaza’s reconstruction. In contrast, Israeli Deputy Foreign Minister Sharren Haskel contested the assertion, stating that the UK’s influence had been overstated.

In a historic move, the UK, along with countries like France, Australia, and Canada, formally recognized Palestinian statehood last month, solidifying support for the region’s political aspirations.
