Comedian Liz Miele has recently faced a significant loss in income, alongside numerous other comedians. SiriusXM has discontinued its Raw Comedy/Raw Dog channel, which previously showcased over 800 comics, and introduced a new channel owned by renowned comedian Sebastian Maniscalco.
This change has left Miele and many other working-class comedians without a crucial source of income and exposure, as prominent celebrity comedians now dominate the platform. Miele shared her financial struggles, revealing that SiriusXM had been instrumental in supporting her during tough times.
The promise from Maniscalco and SiriusXM to provide opportunities for comedians at various career stages contrasts with the reality highlighted by the industry advocacy group Stand Up for Standup. Before the transition, Raw Comedy featured over 800 comedians monthly, each earning $15 in royalties per spin of their content. However, the revamped channel only showcased 275 comedians recently, with the top 50 artists, including Chris Rock and Kevin Hart, receiving more than 75% of the airplay.
Miele expressed disappointment in the channel’s shift towards favoring a smaller group of wealthy comedians, emphasizing the negative impact on the diverse voices that previously thrived on the platform. The void left by platforms like SiriusXM poses challenges for emerging comedians to gain exposure and recognition.
Canadian comedian Danish Anwar also felt the blow, experiencing a significant drop in royalties from Raw Comedy. Many Canadian comics rely on these royalties, with some facing potential visa issues due to the loss of income. The situation has led to uncertainty and financial strain for many in the comedy industry.
Amidst the backlash, high-profile comedians, including Patton Oswalt and Michelle Wolf, have called on Maniscalco to support emerging talents and ensure a diverse representation on the channel. Maniscalco clarified that the decision to discontinue Raw Comedy was not his, stating his commitment to fostering a platform for comedians of all backgrounds.
However, skepticism remains among affected comedians like Anwar, who stress the importance of tangible actions over promises. The need for solidarity and advocacy for fair treatment and compensation within the comedy industry has become more pronounced following these recent developments.
