Sabrina and Junior Hunt were surprised during their trip to their cabin on Shabougamou Lake in Labrador West when they encountered a rare sight – a muskox. Initially mistaken for a pile of wood, the muskox was spotted moving along the shoreline as the couple approached on their boat. They managed to get a closer look at the majestic creature, observing its fur swaying like a magical grass skirt.
Muskox, typically found in Arctic tundra regions, have been sporadically seen in Labrador over the years. While some herds have been spotted in the Nain area migrating from northern Quebec, sightings in Labrador West are uncommon. The couple’s report of the muskox sighting surprised the Department of Forestry, Agriculture, and Lands, who acknowledged the rarity of the event extending beyond the animal’s usual habitat.
The Hunts’ video footage of the muskox roaming in Labrador West captured the attention of local authorities and wildlife enthusiasts. The department emphasized the significance of this sighting, considering it an extraordinary event that highlighted the muskox’s presence beyond its known range.
