Serita Thurton netted two goals in the first half as the bottom-ranked Calgary Wild caused an upset by defeating the top-seeded Ottawa Rapid 4-3 in Northern Super League action at McMahon Stadium on Saturday. Kahli Johnson opened the scoring for the hosts in the 15th minute, with Thurton adding another goal roughly 13 minutes later.
Ottawa’s Jung Min-Young found the net in the 38th minute, and Melanie Forbes equalized to make it 2-2 just before halftime. Thurton secured her second goal just before the break, setting the Wild on course for victory. Jorian Baucom also contributed a goal for the Wild, who now have a record of two wins, 12 losses, and two draws.
Jyllissa Harris managed to score a penalty in the 86th minute for the Rapid, who now stand at 10 wins, three losses, and three draws. The defeat also ended Ottawa’s impressive 10-match unbeaten streak.
Despite controlling 54% of possession, the Rapid were outshot by the Wild 16-13, with the Wild having more shots on target at 9-6. Calgary also secured six corner kicks compared to Ottawa’s one, and the Rapid received one yellow card and one red card during the match.
In another game, Jessica De Filippo scored twice for the Vancouver Rise, with her second goal coming in stoppage time to secure a 2-1 victory over the Halifax Tides at Swangard Stadium in Burnaby, B.C. Jordyn Rhodes had given the fourth-placed Tides the lead in the 19th minute.
The Rise, currently in fifth place, controlled 56% of possession and outshot the Tides 18-13, including a 6-4 advantage in shots on target. Halifax took four of the six corner kicks awarded, while the Rise received two of the three yellow cards issued during the game.
