An explosion occurred near a train station in Augsburg, Germany, leading to a brief closure of the transport hub on Wednesday morning due to the discovery of a suspicious object. Authorities later confirmed that the object was harmless, and the station reopened at 10 a.m., with train services resuming.
According to police spokesperson Timo Küfner, the object found in front of the main train station was deemed safe, allowing for the station’s reopening. Trains were operational again following the incident.
The explosion, caused by an unidentified object in a passageway near the station around 3:15 a.m., resulted in minor injuries to a 17-year-old girl and an 18-year-old man, both Ukrainian citizens. Subsequently, a second suspicious object, which did not detonate, was found at the main train station, prompting the station’s closure at 8:30 a.m.
Explosives experts from the Bavarian state criminal police office were dispatched to investigate the scene. Küfner mentioned that the motive behind the explosion was still under investigation.
The disruption caused by the incident affected road traffic and public transportation in the station’s vicinity during the early morning hours. Reports suggested that the explosion did not target the train station but was instead near a jewelry store where a hand grenade detonated.
Augsburg, with a population of 308,000, is located in Bavaria, approximately 78 kilometers northwest of Munich. The incident follows recent tensions between Germany and Russia, with Germany attributing an attempted drone attack at Leipzig/Halle Airport to Russia, resulting in diplomatic measures against Moscow.
Western officials have accused Moscow of engaging in disruptive activities to undermine European stability and support for Ukraine.
