“Thrift Stores Struggle with Surplus Textiles, Landfill Concerns”

Must Read

Kathy Broussard reveals a significant pile of plastic bags filled with donated textiles at her thrift store. She notes that this constitutes a substantial portion of recent donations. Additionally, the store’s basement and two large outdoor bins receive daily donations.

Broussard describes the constant influx of donations as a never-ending cycle that poses challenges. The store’s team sorts through the items, selling what they can. Unsold items are placed in bins for free pickup by the public for a limited time before being discarded.

As the executive director of Hand in Hand, a non-profit thrift store in Halifax, Broussard expresses concerns about the increasing volume of clothing ending up in landfills due to a lack of alternative outlets for excess stock. Several charity thrift stores, including Hand in Hand, face similar issues with surplus goods disposal.

Charlotte Genge, a consultant in textile circularity, highlights the diminishing options for thrift stores to dispose of unsold items, citing rising dumping fees as a significant challenge. She projects a surge in textile waste sent to landfills unless solutions are implemented to address the issue.

The National Diabetes Trust temporarily halts pickups from thrift stores in select provinces due to changing market conditions affecting inventory levels. Value Village, a common buyer for non-profit collectors, has shifted its sourcing strategy towards direct donations to maximize profitability.

Bank & Vogue, a major exporter of used clothing in Canada, faces challenges such as escalating collection costs and market competition. Despite the current difficulties, the company anticipates the thrift industry will adjust to the evolving market dynamics.

Genge emphasizes the need for government intervention to curb excessive clothing consumption in Canada. She advocates for policies like extended producer responsibility and increased use of recycled content to promote sustainable practices in the textile industry.
