The 7.4-magnitude quake, the strongest in Colombia in decades, wreaked havoc on the country’s coffee-growing region, causing widespread destruction to buildings and infrastructure.
In the most severely impacted areas, rescue operations continued non-stop as crews used heavy machinery and worked tirelessly to locate and extract trapped individuals. The priority remains on saving lives, providing medical aid, and ensuring the swift deployment of rescue teams, as stated by Interior Minister Rodrigo Lara.
Initial reports indicated 126 confirmed fatalities and nearly 1,500 injuries, but local assessments suggest the death toll could be around 254 as authorities gain access to more affected regions and communication networks are gradually restored. Thousands of homes were damaged, with numerous buildings reduced to rubble and hundreds of residences completely destroyed.
In the city of Cali, residents were forced onto the streets as parts of buildings collapsed, including sections of a hospital dedicated to pediatric care. The community rallied together, salvaging belongings and adapting to life outdoors amidst the chaos. In Pereira, another hard-hit city, neighborhoods lay in ruins, prompting residents and volunteers to form human chains in search of survivors.
The earthquake also caused widespread disruption to critical infrastructure, leading to the closure of several airports and numerous road closures. The loss of essential services like electricity and water further complicated rescue and relief efforts, particularly in areas near the quake’s epicenter.
International aid efforts have commenced, with the United States and the Inter-American Development Bank pledging millions of dollars for emergency assistance and reconstruction support. However, with communication challenges persisting in heavily affected regions, authorities anticipate that it will take time to assess the full extent of the damage and determine the final casualty count.
