“Evacuees Rely on Unofficial Updates Amid Summerland Uncertainty”

Must Read

Frustrated individuals evacuated from Summerland, British Columbia, are turning to unofficial channels for updates on their community’s status in the absence of official information. Despite authorities cautioning against misinformation, evacuees are relying on images and videos shared by residents who remained in the evacuated area, such as an e-bike rider navigating through empty streets.

Kerry Gold, a resident, expressed relief at the e-bike rider’s footage, which provided a glimpse of the untouched streets of Summerland. While she discourages individuals from risking their safety by staying behind, she finds solace in the visual updates shared online.

Erick Thompson, the Regional District of Okanagan-Similkameen’s senior communications manager, acknowledged the evacuees’ frustrations and expressed a desire to access Summerland’s downtown to provide residents with a firsthand view of the situation.

The provincial government reported significant property damage from the Bald Range fire, which ravaged homes and most of the Faulder community. However, official damage assessments have been delayed due to hazardous conditions.

Authorities have warned against spreading false information on social media, emphasizing the importance of relying on verified sources. Evacuees in Penticton were advised to stay informed through official channels, given the rapidly changing conditions due to heavy smoke cover.

Residents have criticized the lack of clear communication from officials, highlighting the need for transparent updates to alleviate anxieties among evacuees. Suggestions have been made for designated liaison officers to provide timely and accurate information, similar to the role played by health officials during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Emergency Management Minister Kelly Greene emphasized the importance of responsible communication to ensure individuals are informed about their property’s status through official channels rather than discovering losses through media sources.
