“Former Teacher Jailed for Sexual Abuse at Catholic School”

Must Read

A former teacher has been sentenced to 14 months in prison for the appalling sexual abuse of three students at a Catholic school in Southampton, Hampshire. Leo Norman, a former English and media teacher at St Anne’s School, targeted the teenage girls between September 2014 and June 2019. Norman pleaded guilty to three charges of sexual activity with a child by a person in a position of trust at Portsmouth Crown Court.

In addition to the jail term, the 46-year-old from Southampton was issued a Sexual Harm Prevention Order and required to register as a sex offender for a decade. The court highlighted Norman’s misuse of his position of trust as he was convicted.

According to the Crown Prosecution Service, Norman manipulated his victims by giving them extra attention, compliments, and engaging in inappropriate physical contact after building trust with them through personal interactions. The victims expressed feeling confused and uncomfortable due to Norman’s actions.

Melissa Garner, a specialist prosecutor, condemned Norman’s repeated exploitation of his authority to prey on vulnerable victims over several years. She praised the victims for their bravery in reporting the offenses and supporting the prosecution to ensure justice and protect others.

Detective Constable Laura Hardie of Hampshire Constabulary described the case as shocking, emphasizing that Norman had abused his position of trust to sexually assault three teenage girls on multiple occasions spanning several years. Hardie commended the victims for their courage in coming forward and assisting in Norman’s prosecution.

During the court proceedings, the victims recounted instances where Norman displayed inappropriate behavior, such as writing poems, making them sit on his lap, and showering them with compliments and physical gestures. One victim expressed feeling like a ‘siren’ and blamed herself for Norman’s inappropriate attraction.
