The Home Secretary reportedly sent officials to Denmark recently to examine its rigorous border control and asylum measures, which are renowned as some of the strictest in Europe.
Denmark’s strategies such as imposing stricter rules on family reunions and limiting certain refugees to temporary stays are under scrutiny. These approaches have notably led to a substantial decrease in asylum applications to the lowest level in four decades and a remarkable 95% success rate in deporting rejected asylum seekers.
Amidst differing opinions within the Labour Party, some Members of Parliament are in favor of stricter measures to counter the Reform UK party, while others fear a potential shift of voters towards the Green Party and the Liberal Democrats. Shabana Mahmood aims to deter unauthorized entries into the country while streamlining the process of deporting individuals lacking the right to remain in the UK. She is eager to meet with Denmark’s Immigration Minister, Rasmus Stoklund, to further discuss these matters.
Rasmus Stoklund has previously likened Danish society to the peaceful and harmonious lifestyle of the hobbits in “The Lord of the Rings,” emphasizing the expectation for newcomers to contribute positively to society.
Gareth Snell, Labour MP for Stoke-on-Trent Central, expressed willingness to explore changes that promote fairness in an asylum system that lacks trust among constituents. He highlighted the importance of learning from successful immigration management strategies implemented by sister parties worldwide.
Conversely, Nadia Whittome, MP for Nottingham East and a member of the Socialist Campaign Group caucus, cautioned against adopting the Danish model, labeling it as “far-right” policies that should not be entertained by the Labour government.
Recent statistics from the Home Office revealed that 648 migrants arrived in the UK via the Channel on Friday, bringing the total number for the year to 38,223.
