“Parents Charged with Murder of Toddler in Squalid Crib”

A woman facing accusations of neglecting her toddler, who was found deceased in a squalid crib, reportedly expressed no remorse to authorities upon the discovery.

Charged with the murder of their 18-month-old daughter, a couple from Utah is alleged to have left the child unattended for prolonged periods, providing minimal sustenance and subjecting her to substandard sleeping conditions in a crib filled with refuse and food remnants.

Carrie Marie Murray and Mitchell Chesnut Murray, aged 31, were arrested and are now in custody without bail, each charged with aggravated murder and severe child abuse in connection with the death of their daughter, Ruby Marie Murray, discovered unresponsive on March 19.

Per information from probable cause statements cited by Law and Crime, Carrie Murray, a trained nurse, reported finding her daughter lifeless in her crib around 10.30 am and contacted emergency services. Despite her medical background, she declined to administer aid, claiming she believed the child was beyond saving.

During police interrogation, the mother displayed detachment, speculating that the child might have succumbed to Sudden Infant Death Syndrome, although acknowledging that Ruby was older than the typical age for such cases. She allegedly stated, “It was her time, I guess,” and denied culpability, asserting she felt no guilt over the situation.

Subsequent examination of baby monitor footage revealed shocking conditions within Ruby’s crib, with multiple sippy cups and food debris, primarily waffle pieces, scattered around the bedding. The room’s temperature was maintained at 77 degrees, significantly warmer than the child’s body temperature of 83 degrees, posing a risk of hypothermia.

Furthermore, investigators noted that loud music, including tracks by Green Day and Fall Out Boy, played incessantly in Ruby’s room, disturbing her sleep. The parents admitted that Ruby’s diet mainly comprised toasted waffles left in her crib, with minimal consumption of proper baby food.

Video recordings from the baby monitor depicted a distressing timeline leading up to Ruby’s passing, indicating prolonged periods confined to the crib without interaction or care from her parents. Mitchell Murray disclosed a routine of “crib days,” where Ruby remained in the cot while he worked, occurring once or twice weekly.

The tragic cause of Ruby’s death was determined to be dehydration and malnutrition, with the parents accused of subjecting her to detrimental conditions including heat, isolation, and sleep deprivation. Carrie and Mitchell Murray are detained without bail pending further investigation.
