The Ministry of Justice is facing a crisis following the accidental release of two prisoners from the same jail within days of each other. Brahim Kaddour-Cherif, a registered sex offender, was mistakenly set free from HMP Wandsworth last week, while fraudster William Smith, also known as Billy, was released on Monday due to a mix-up in court records.
Both men are now subjects of police manhunts. These incidents occurred shortly after another mishap where a paedophile named Hadush Kebatu was erroneously released from HMP Chelmsford on October 24.
Deputy Prime Minister David Lammy, who is also the Justice Secretary, expressed his outrage over Kaddour-Cherif’s release, highlighting the systemic flaws within the criminal justice system. Kaddour-Cherif, an Algerian national, had been in the process of deportation but went missing on October 29. He had a history of legal issues, including a case of indecent exposure.
Meanwhile, Smith, sentenced to 45 months for fraud offenses, was mistakenly released from Wandsworth due to a court records error. The confusion stemmed from a mix-up with his co-defendant, resulting in Smith being released while his counterpart received a suspended sentence.
The authorities are working to rectify the errors in the release process, with police urging the public to assist in locating the individuals. The incidents have sparked criticism of the justice system, with calls for accountability and improvements to prevent such errors from reoccurring.
