After a long wait, the Meta-owned app is finally resolving this issue by introducing unique usernames. This new feature will allow users to share their usernames instead of their phone numbers, providing a more privacy-conscious option.
According to WhatsApp, sharing a phone number can be a significant step when interacting with new acquaintances like classmates, neighbors, event contacts, or group chat members. The introduction of usernames aims to offer users a way to chat without divulging their personal phone numbers.
In addition, the update will enhance privacy in group conversations. With this change, users joining community or social group chats will be able to engage without immediately exposing their phone numbers to strangers.
WhatsApp has announced that users can now reserve their preferred usernames before the full launch. Due to the platform’s massive user base, popular usernames may be claimed quickly, so early reservations are recommended to secure the desired username and avoid missing out.
To reserve a username, users should update their WhatsApp to the latest version and navigate to Settings > Account > Username.
The rollout of this feature will happen gradually in the upcoming months, and WhatsApp will notify users when usernames become available in their specific regions.
