“Over 100 Bank Branches to Close in 2026 Amid High Street Decline”

Must Read

Over 100 bank branches are expected to shut down in 2026 as part of the ongoing trend of high street withdrawals.

This year, closure dates have been confirmed for 73 branches of major banks such as Lloyds, NatWest, Santander, Halifax, and Bank of Scotland.

An additional 29 branches have declared closure plans without a final date set yet, tallying up to 102 closures. Lloyds is at the forefront with 40 branches nearing closure or awaiting a definitive shutdown date.

Santander, Bank of Scotland, Halifax, and NatWest are also set to close 18, 17, 15, and 7 branches, respectively.

Last year, Lloyds and Santander announced multiple closures attributing the decision to the shift of customers towards digital banking services over in-person visits.

By the end of this month, a total of 35 branches will have disappeared from high streets, with two more closures in February and an additional 23 in March.

The remaining closures are scheduled for July and October, or are still pending confirmation. Cornwall is experiencing a significant impact with four banks already set to close this year and two more awaiting closure dates.

Following 13 closures last year, there were six in 2024, 14 in 2023, and six in 2022, totaling 45 closures. Scotland’s Highland council area is also facing potential closure of six banks this year, including two with unannounced closure dates.

In total, Scotland will lose 20 banks, with five closures in Wales and one in Northern Ireland. Among the 76 remaining closures in England, the South East and South West are most affected, each with 17 branch closures.

Since February 2022, major banking groups have committed to evaluating the impact of each closure voluntarily, resulting in a total of 2,065 branches either closing or planning closure.
