Donald Trump is scheduled to hold discussions with Vladimir Putin over the phone today in a renewed effort to resolve the Russian President’s aggression towards Ukraine. This conversation precedes Trump’s forthcoming meeting with Ukraine’s President, Volodymyr Zelensky, with speculations emerging that the US might authorize Kyiv to utilize long-range Tomahawk missiles.
Trump has been vocal in his criticism of Putin’s reluctance to cease the conflict in Ukraine and his avoidance of direct peace talks with Zelensky. The meeting between Zelensky and Trump at the White House on Friday is anticipated to involve discussions on acquiring advanced weaponry, including Patriot air defense systems.
Expressing his willingness to provide Ukraine with weapons if Putin persists in obstructing peace efforts, Trump emphasized the potential deployment of Tomahawk missiles. These missiles, with a range of 2,500km and nearly half-ton warheads, could significantly bolster Kyiv’s strategic capabilities, allowing for deep strikes into Russian territory. Trump praised the effectiveness of the missiles, indicating Ukraine’s desire to take an offensive stance.
Zelensky highlighted that tools like Patriots and Tomahawks could lay the groundwork for long-term peace during a statement on Wednesday.
In previous statements, Trump condemned Putin’s incursion into Ukraine, remarking on the ongoing conflict’s negative portrayal of the Russian leader. He credited Ukraine for holding off Russian forces for four years.
The US President mentioned the possibility of engaging in discussions with Russia before granting Ukraine access to Tomahawk missiles.
This development follows Putin’s defiance of Trump by launching a significant aerial assault on Ukraine shortly after being urged to cease hostilities by the US President. The Kremlin initiated a barrage of attacks using MiG-31 bombers equipped with Kinzhal hypersonic missiles, resulting in multiple casualties and widespread destruction across Ukrainian cities.
