The victim, a tourist, was swimming and filming in the waters when he was surrounded by dusky sharks. Subsequent searches recovered small amounts of human remains, confirming the victim’s identity and indicating that he had been consumed by multiple sharks during the attack. Dusky sharks, despite their size of up to 3 meters (10 feet), are typically shy creatures but have been influenced by various factors leading to increased interactions with humans.
Researchers attribute the rare shark attack to a combination of factors, including feeding behavior, warm water from desalination plants, and food waste disposal in the area. Human activities such as feeding the sharks for tourism purposes have altered the sharks’ behavior, causing them to associate humans with food and exhibit aggressive feeding habits.
