An 88-year-old Army veteran, Ed Bambas, is on the brink of retirement after receiving over $1.2 million (£902,000) from supporters to help him start anew. Bambas, who had worked at General Motors (GM) until 1999, found himself in unexpected jobs at a hardware store and later as a supermarket cashier due to financial struggles stemming from personal tragedies and pension decisions. The collapse of GM in 2009, the largest bankruptcy in US history, further exacerbated his situation.
Following GM’s restructuring, Bambas, one of nearly 20,000 impacted Delphi Corp employees, opted for a lump sum payment of $300,000 (£224,800) which led to the cessation of his pension benefits. However, unforeseen circumstances, including his wife’s severe illness, resulted in a financial strain as healthcare coverage and most of his life insurance were lost due to the lump sum choice.
After his wife’s passing, Bambas had to start over and returned to full-time work for survival. A video with influencer Sam Weidenhofer shed light on his struggles, prompting a GoFundMe campaign to support Bambas with living expenses, medical care, and comfort. The fundraiser has surpassed $1.2 million (£902,000) as donors rally in support of the veteran.
Weidenhofer expressed the need to stand up for Bambas, emphasizing his dedication to his country and hard work throughout his life. Heartfelt messages from donors echoed sentiments of admiration and support for Bambas, urging him to enjoy life after years of challenges. Plans are in place to ensure the funds are securely delivered to Bambas for his well-being and future.
