Some individuals among the six million no longer qualifying for complimentary NHS Covid vaccines have expressed concerns that health authorities are risking their lives.
Recent updates have restricted eligibility for free NHS Covid vaccinations to exclude individuals aged 65 to 74 without a serious immune-weakening condition. With the emergence of new virus strains like Nimbus and Stratus in the UK, patients are reporting symptoms such as a sharp sore throat in addition to typical Covid-like signs.
Government statistics from last week revealed a spike in Covid-related deaths, the highest in five months since May. The number of confirmed infections rose by 10%, leading to over 2,000 Covid patients being hospitalized in England.
Tracy Slaney, a 55-year-old from Mansfield with heart failure, blindness in one eye, and double amputation, expressed dismay over the exclusion from the Covid vaccine, fearing severe consequences if infected. She likened the situation to a game of chance, stating she feels on edge due to the continuous emergence of new virus strains.
Over the past two years, individuals aged 65 and older have been offered Covid booster shots to safeguard their health during winter. This year, the vaccine was extended to those over 50.
The Joint Committee on Vaccination and Immunisation (JCVI), an advisory body to the UK government, announced that only individuals aged 75 and above would be eligible for the NHS vaccine this year.
Furthermore, frontline health and social care workers are no longer entitled to booster doses following the decision made in June for the upcoming winter season.
Linda Arthur, 72, and John Arthur, 74, from Kent, along with their daughter Alexandra, a 37-year-old with profound learning difficulties residing in a nursing home, are now ineligible for NHS vaccinations. Linda expressed concern over the exclusion of vulnerable nursing home residents from vaccinations, highlighting the risks posed by their exposure to carers.
There are worries that individuals aged 65 to 74 with conditions like asthma and COPD are at higher risk of severe illness or death from Covid.
For those not meeting the criteria for free NHS vaccinations, several high street pharmacies offer the option to receive vaccinations privately. Prices vary, with the flu vaccine typically costing around £20 and the Covid booster priced at approximately £100.
High street pharmacies like Boots, Well Pharmacy, and Rowlands Pharmacy offer vaccinations to individuals aged 12 and above.
George Sandhu, deputy superintendent at Well Pharmacy, emphasized the importance of individuals protecting themselves adequately against rising Covid cases and new variants.
A spokesperson from the Department of Health and Social Care stated that Covid-19 vaccination eligibility is determined based on advice from the JCVI.
