Donald Trump has announced plans for a forthcoming in-person meeting with Russian leader Vladimir Putin, following a recent phone call between the two presidents. During the call, they discussed trade and the conflict in Ukraine. Trump, aiming to strengthen his diplomatic achievements, mentioned his involvement in brokering a deal between Palestine and Israel, despite recent threats to disrupt it.
After the call, Trump disclosed on Truth Social that he and Putin agreed to hold a meeting with their high-level advisors meeting first, led by Secretary of State Marco Rubio. Following these preliminary discussions, the main meeting is scheduled to take place in Budapest, Hungary, a location chosen strategically by Trump due to Hungary’s leadership alignment with him and its ties to Russia.
Trump expressed optimism about progress in resolving the conflict between Russia and Ukraine, citing a positive conversation with Putin. He also highlighted Putin’s praise for the United States’ involvement in achieving peace in the Middle East. However, Trump also issued warnings regarding the fragile Israel-Hamas peace deal, stating intentions to intervene if necessary.
Hungary’s selection as the meeting site was influenced by its leadership’s pro-Putin stance and close ties to Russia, particularly evident during Hungary’s assumption of the EU council presidency. Trump’s upcoming meetings with Putin and Ukrainian President Zelenskyy are anticipated to focus on efforts to end the conflict in the region.
