“Veterans Access Digital ID Cards via Smartphone App”

Must Read

Digital veteran ID cards are now accessible through smartphones, providing a convenient way for almost two million veterans to verify their status using an official government app. This initiative allows military veterans to easily access benefits like housing support, discounts at various establishments, and personalized healthcare services by sharing their service history with healthcare providers.

The digital cards are optional, and veterans will still have the option to use physical ID cards if preferred. This launch marks the Government’s first step in introducing digital ID cards, with plans to test digital driving licenses later this year.

While concerns have been raised about data protection and civil liberties regarding digital ID cards, Ian Murray, the minister for digital government, sees the veterans ID cards as a potential model to address public worries and showcase the functionality of such credentials.

To use the veterans’ card, individuals can utilize the GOV.UK One Login app, designed for proving identity when accessing government services. The full implementation of the GOV.UK wallet, which will encompass various digital credentials like digital driving licenses, will be rolled out in the future.

Technology Secretary Liz Kendall emphasized the importance of supporting veterans through digital solutions, stating that the digital veterans’ card will streamline access to public services by eliminating barriers and reducing administrative hurdles.

Initially, the veterans’ card can only be utilized in person, such as for discounts at museums, but online usage will be enabled in the near future.
