Households across the UK are being encouraged to apply for a £100 grant from the Household Support Fund, designed to assist low-income families with essential expenses like food, energy, and water bills. The fund, managed by local councils, offers various forms of assistance, including vouchers and direct cash payments, based on each council’s discretion.
City of York Council has highlighted that over 2,000 eligible residents in the area have not yet claimed their £100 support payment. The money is provided directly to eligible individuals’ bank accounts and does not require repayment, specifically targeting those already receiving council tax support.
Nearly 5,000 residents in York are eligible for the grant, with the council having dispatched letters containing application instructions. Applicants are required to submit a recent bank statement displaying personal details and must complete the claim process by November 23, 2025.
Cllr Katie Lomas of City of York Council emphasized the importance of claiming the support before the deadline, stressing that the grant is non-repayable and aims to alleviate financial burdens during the challenging winter months.
Residents outside of York are advised to explore similar schemes offered by their local councils. For instance, Portsmouth City Council is providing £150 to single individuals and £200 to couples or families meeting specific income criteria.
To qualify for the grant, individuals must be in receipt of certain benefits and have a household income below specified thresholds. Ensuring that eligible households access the financial support they need is crucial amidst the ongoing cost of living challenges.
