In Zimbabwe, a traditional practice known as “Nhanga,” which historically aimed to prepare young girls for marriage by teaching them how to please their adult husbands, is undergoing a significant transformation. Previously, the secluded space was used to instruct girls in various household chores and sexual duties. However, in Shamva, this ritual is being reimagined as a safe environment where girls engage in open discussions about important topics like sexuality, child marriage, pregnancy, gender bias, education, and legal rights.
The primary goal of this reformed approach is to empower girls to resist the prevalent issue of child marriage in Zimbabwe, where a significant number of girls are married off before reaching 18 years old. Despite legal bans on child marriage in Zimbabwe and other African countries, the practice persists due to factors such as poverty, weak law enforcement, and deeply entrenched cultural norms. Through initiatives like the one in Shamva, young women like Samantha Chidodo, who was forced into marriage at 17, are finding support to pursue education and break free from harmful traditions.
By fostering a supportive community and encouraging girls to take charge of their futures, programs like the modern Nhanga movement are gaining traction and inspiring positive change. With more than 200 girls actively participating in the program in Shamva and its adoption by schools across the country, there is hope for a shift in societal attitudes towards child marriage. Leaders are enforcing strict penalties for early marriage offenders, ensuring that girls have the opportunity to continue their education without financial barriers.
Although progress is being made, challenges remain in changing deep-rooted cultural beliefs and attitudes towards girls’ rights. Initiatives like the Rozaria Memorial Trust are instrumental in raising awareness and advocating for the end of harmful practices like child marriage. It is crucial to involve young girls themselves in the conversation and empower them to stand up against injustices. Through collective efforts and positive role modeling, the younger generation can drive significant social change and create a brighter future for all.
