Michelle Tolley was elated when she received recognition at the Daily Mirror’s Pride of Britain Awards for her advocacy work. A surprising twist awaited her during the event. The 60-year-old, humorously calling herself “59 plus one,” has been a dedicated advocate, seeking justice for over 30,000 individuals affected by the NHS infected blood scandal.
Last year, Michelle, along with fellow campaigners Andrew Evans and Jason Evans, received a Special Recognition Award at the Pride of Britain ceremony. While attending the awards, Michelle witnessed midwife Agnes Nisbett being awarded a cruise holiday from P&O Cruises, the new headline sponsor of the awards. To her astonishment, it was announced that all 2024 winners would receive the same prize.
After years of battling health issues and tirelessly supporting fellow victims while holding the government accountable, Michelle was thrilled by this unexpected gift. Infected with hepatitis C after a blood transfusion in 1987, she endured 28 years of suffering before receiving a proper diagnosis and treatment.
Motivated by anger, Michelle channeled her energy into positive endeavors, managing support groups, collaborating with the Hepatitis C Trust, and providing testimony at the official government inquiry. The prospect of a well-deserved holiday was a welcomed relief for Michelle and her husband Dean, who had not traveled abroad since their marriage in 1984.
Their cruise to the Canary Islands, booked in honor of their 40th wedding anniversary, included a surprise vow renewal ceremony organized by P&O Cruises. From the moment they boarded the Ventura ship, Michelle was overwhelmed with joy, describing the experience as akin to Christmas morning.
During their voyage, the couple explored various amenities on board, indulging in delicious cuisine, shopping, swimming, and enjoying the onboard entertainment. They also had the opportunity to visit Madeira and the Canary Islands, where they embarked on excursions, including a tuk-tuk tour in Las Palmas and a coach and river cruise in Lisbon.
Impressed by the exceptional service and amenities, Michelle and Dean are eager to repeat the cruise experience. Michelle encourages others to embark on a cruise holiday, praising the fantastic facilities and the friendly staff on board. She fondly recalls feeling like royalty on the Ventura and emphasizes the warmth of the entire experience.
