“Record Drug Poisoning Deaths Prompt Urgent Government Caution”

Must Read

Drug poisoning fatalities have surged to an all-time high, prompting an urgent caution from the Government directed at young individuals. Vapes tainted with the notorious “zombie drug” Spice, contaminated ketamine, and synthetic opioids are inflicting severe harm on youths, with some losing their lives as a result. In 2023, drug poisoning deaths in England and Wales spiked to 5,448, marking the highest figure since records commenced in 1993. This figure represents an escalation from 4,907 deaths in 2022, with a continual rise in fatalities every year since 2012. Notably, the number of individuals necessitating treatment for ketamine has surged by eight times since 2015.

Expressing concern, Health Minister Ashley Dalton emphasized the profound repercussions of consuming drugs like ketamine, cautioning that it can lead to bladder deterioration and even fatal consequences. The surge in individuals experiencing harm from ketamine, as well as from intentionally tainted vapes and synthetic opioids concealed in counterfeit medications bought online, is alarming.

To address this pressing issue, an online awareness initiative has been launched, featuring targeted films aimed at 16-24-year-olds and social media users, where illicit drug products are frequently promoted. A significant issue lies in the sale of e-cigarettes falsely advertised to contain THC, the primary psychoactive element in cannabis known for inducing a “high” and serving medical and recreational purposes. However, unscrupulous online drug vendors often substitute the cheaper synthetic cannabinoid Spice for THC, raising concerns.

Spice, also recognized as K2, “fake weed,” or “Black Mamba,” is typically distributed as a liquid for vaping or as dried plant material sprayed with the chemical for smoking. Originally formulated to imitate the effects of cannabis, Spice has gained popularity within certain communities and is prevalent in prison settings. Its consumption can result in immobility, dizziness, breathing complications, chest pain, heart palpitations, seizures, paranoia, suicidal ideation, psychosis, and acute kidney injuries.

Recent research conducted by various British universities, examining 1,923 e-cigarettes and e-liquids from 114 schools in England, revealed the presence of Spice in 13% of the samples. Ketamine poisoning cases have surged, with urologists expressing heightened apprehension over young individuals presenting severe bladder issues due to recreational ketamine use. Concerns are also mounting that ongoing clinical trials exploring potential medical benefits of quality-controlled ketamine are misleading young people into believing that illicitly obtained ketamine on the black market is safe for recreational use.

The awareness campaign aims to underscore the risks associated with counterfeit medications containing lethal synthetic opioids procured online. It coincides with an additional £310 million in Government funding allocated for drug treatment services. Katy Porter, chief executive of drug-checking charity The Loop, hailed the increased investment in evidence-based interventions to mitigate drug-related harm, emphasizing the significance of providing accurate and non-judgmental information to empower individuals in making safer decisions and minimizing avoidable harm.

Echoing this sentiment, Health Minister Ashley Dalton reiterated the government’s commitment to prevention in combating drug-related issues and stressed the significance of equipping young people with accurate information to make informed decisions concerning their well-being. This initiative aims to encourage youths to exercise caution and prioritize their safety by making informed choices.
