An adult film star, Devyn Michaels, aged 47, has been convicted of murdering her ex-husband, Johnathan Willette, aged 46, after marrying her stepson. Michaels now faces the possibility of a lifelong prison sentence for the homicide of Willette, whose headless body was found soaked in chemicals at his residence.
Willette’s mother discovered his body, wrapped in blankets and blood, leading to Michaels’ arrest. Prosecutors revealed that Michaels, a porn star from Las Vegas, carried out the heinous act due to jealousy towards Willette, who had gained sole custody of their two children.
During Michaels’ trial, prosecutor John Giordani showcased crime-scene photos, including images of the victim’s body, cautioning the jury to brace themselves for the disturbing evidence. Michaels confessed to hitting Willette with a candlestick-like object while giving him a massage, as revealed in court footage. She admitted that Willette stopped moving after the assault.
Following the attack, Michaels decapitated her ex-husband and transported his head in a laundry basket to her residence. She later disposed of the head in a bin in her local area in August 2023, as disclosed in court proceedings.
Prosecutor Brittni Griffith informed jurors that Michaels wanted to eliminate her ex-husband from her life, even though Willette was in the process of reuniting with her and their son. Michaels and Willette, who shared two daughters, had a tumultuous relationship, culminating in their divorce in 2018. Michaels then married Willette’s son, Deviere Willette, aged 29, in a marriage she described as one of convenience.
Deviere Willette denied any involvement in his father’s death, despite attempts by Michaels’ defense team to implicate him as a suspect. No evidence, such as phone records or videos, linked him to the crime scene.
The victim’s head remains missing, and no murder weapon or tools used in the dismemberment have been recovered. Michaels’ lawyers argued against her capability to decapitate someone of Willette’s size and emphasized the absence of witnesses or sounds during the alleged murder.
Initially pleading guilty to second-degree murder as part of a plea agreement with a 15-year prison term and parole possibility, Michaels claimed innocence during her sentencing hearing in July, leading to a first-degree murder trial. Recently, the jury rendered a guilty verdict against her.
At the trial’s onset, the lead prosecutor stated that Michaels killed Willette to establish a life with his son and her children. Displaying a family photo featuring Michaels, Deviere, and the children, the prosecutor asserted that Michaels sought a future with Willette out of the picture.
Michaels is scheduled for sentencing on January 8 and could receive a life sentence with or without parole, as prosecutors opted not to pursue the death penalty.
