“Over Half Hold Multiple Pension Pots, Many Unaware of Total”

Must Read

A recent study by Scottish Widows reveals that over half of individuals now possess more than two workplace pension funds. Approximately 9% of people are unsure about the number of pension pots they hold, while 23% intend to merge their pension pots but are unsure about the process.

Michael Bryans, a 38-year-old music teacher from Dumfries, Scotland, was surprised by the amount accumulated in his retirement pots when he had the opportunity to consolidate his pensions after changing jobs. Initially, he had two pension pots, one valued at £20,768 and the other at £412. Bryans advises others to start planning for retirement early.

Statistics from the Pensions Policy Institute reveal that there is an estimated £31.1 billion in unclaimed or inactive pensions, with the average pot valued at £9,469. Bryans emphasized the importance of actively managing pension consolidation, as he navigated through the complexities of merging three different pension funds.

It is recommended to seek independent financial advice before consolidating pension pots to ensure a seamless process. While consolidating offers administrative convenience by centralizing pensions, individuals should compare charges and potential exit fees of old pensions with the new one. Additionally, it is essential to assess if any existing pension benefits, such as guaranteed annuity rates, would be forfeited.

Bryans is still locating pension pots from his previous part-time employment and has initiated a private pension to supplement his retirement savings. The Pension Tracing Service is a valuable tool to search for workplace and personal pension schemes, connecting individuals with provider contact information for further inquiries.

Alternatively, individuals can reach out to their employers for pension details or utilize the Government’s Pension Wise service for free guidance. Notably, a past report by the Mirror highlighted a case where a mother discovered £48,000 in a forgotten pension pot, underscoring the significance of monitoring and consolidating pension funds for financial security.
