“NATO Scrambles Jets as Russian Aircraft Breach European Airspace”

Must Read

NATO has once again scrambled fighter jets in response to Russian aircraft breaching European airspace. The incursion involved a Russian Su-30 fighter and II-78 refueling tanker violating Lithuanian airspace for a brief 18-second period, originating from the Kaliningrad region.

Spanish Eurofighter planes, part of NATO’s Baltic Air Police, were swiftly deployed in response to the breach. Lithuania’s President condemned the violation, emphasizing the significance of upholding international law and territorial integrity.

President Gitanas Nausėda criticized the incident, stating that it underscores the necessity of bolstering European air defense readiness. Lithuania’s defense ministry reassured the public of the country’s strength and readiness following the breach.

This latest airspace violation is part of a series of provocations by Russia, sparking concerns and calls for enhanced security measures in Europe. Past incidents, including Russian MiG-31 jets entering Estonian airspace, have prompted strong responses from NATO, with Italian F-35 jets deployed for added security.

Estonian Prime Minister Kristen Michal urged unified and robust NATO responses to provocations, stressing the importance of consultation and joint action among allies. Recent drone incidents in Poland and Romania, following attacks in Ukraine, have heightened tensions in the region.

Lithuania’s military indicated that the recent breach likely occurred during Russian Su-30 training exercises over the Kaliningrad Oblast, a Russian exclave bordering Lithuania and Poland.
