A luxurious London mansion worth £12 million has been targeted in a series of sanctions aimed at individuals believed to be behind illegal scam operations. The UK and US jointly imposed sanctions on assets associated with a network of centers in south-east Asia, accused of defrauding victims of significant amounts of money.
As part of the enforcement, assets such as a multi-million pound mansion on Avenue Road in North London have been frozen. This property, owned by a company allegedly involved in exploiting forced labor for fraudulent activities, boasts 10 bedrooms, a cinema, gym, pool, wine room, and a driveway car lift.
Additionally, a £100 million office building in the City of London, situated near the ‘Walkie Talkie’ skyscraper, and 17 flats scattered across the capital, each valued between £950,000 to £1.5 million, have also been impacted by the sanctions.
According to the Foreign Office, the network identified as The Prince Group, responsible for running the scam centers, reportedly subjects trafficked workers to torture and deceives victims worldwide into parting with their money.
The network’s leader, Chen Zhi, and his associates allegedly established businesses in the British Virgin Islands and invested in the London property market. The sanctions are intended to immediately freeze these businesses and properties, effectively barring Chen and his network from accessing the UK’s financial system.
Yvette Cooper expressed concern over the detrimental impact of these scam centers on vulnerable individuals and their use of London properties for illicit purposes. The Foreign Secretary emphasized the collaborative efforts with US allies to combat the cross-border threat posed by this network, safeguard human rights, protect British citizens, and eliminate illicit funds from circulating within the country.
Fraud Minister Lord Hanson vowed to crack down on fraudsters preying on vulnerable individuals, causing financial ruin and emotional distress. The government’s commitment to preventing financial crimes and ensuring accountability for offenders was underscored through the imposition of these sanctions.
Lord Hanson also highlighted the forthcoming Global Fraud Summit and the enhanced Fraud Strategy as part of the government’s comprehensive approach to disrupting corrupt networks and safeguarding the public from unscrupulous criminal activities.
