“MPs Call for Tax Relief to Revive UK Pubs”

Must Read

MPs have raised concerns about the heavy tax burden faced by pubs in the UK, emphasizing the need for significant measures to alleviate the strain on the industry. The All-Party Parliamentary Beer Group highlighted that recent regulations are stifling the potential growth of the pub and brewing sector, which is a vital economic driver employing over a million people and contributing £34.3 billion to the economy. They emphasized that this sector plays a crucial role in rejuvenating high streets, fostering community cohesion, and spurring growth.

The group of MPs outlined a set of proposals aimed at boosting the sector’s growth potential by 6% annually and creating half a million new jobs by 2030. Their recommendations include reducing or eliminating employer National Insurance Contributions, especially for young employees under 25, reforming Business Rates, lowering beer duty by at least 5%, and aligning the definition of alcohol-free beers with European standards at 0.5%.

Additionally, the MPs called for investments in employment, skills development, brewing innovation, and apprenticeship reforms. They also suggested expanding capital allowances to cover pub furniture, kitchen equipment, and renewable energy projects like solar panels to support sustainability efforts.

Tonia Antoniazzi, the chair of the APPBG and a Labour MP, stressed the urgent need to address the tax burden on the sector to unlock its growth potential and benefit the wider economy. The Mirror’s campaign to support struggling pubs has garnered support from various political figures, including Keir Starmer, who has proposed extending pub operating hours and cutting red tape hindering their operations.

The government has pledged to review and streamline licensing rules to support pubs and small businesses, recognizing their vital role in local communities and economic growth. The Mirror’s “Your Pub Needs You” crusade aims to rally support for the industry by advocating for government funding, acknowledging community-centric bars, and facilitating community buyouts of local pubs.
