A mother has criticized the legal system for what she perceives as a light sentence given to the perpetrator who sexually abused her daughter. Liam Moir initiated the abuse when the girl turned 12 and continued it over a five-month period until she disclosed the incidents to her grandmother after he threatened her younger sister. In a recent court hearing at Glasgow Sheriff Court, Moir received an 18-month prison term and a 10-year registration on the sex offenders list.
Expressing her dissatisfaction with the sentence, the victims’ mother stated that the punishment seemed inadequate considering the long-lasting trauma inflicted on her daughter. The girl, now 14, testified in court against Moir, revealing the emotional toll the ordeal had taken on her. She experienced changes in behavior, including self-harm and disordered eating, withdrawing from social activities and school out of fear of encountering Moir.
Despite the distressing impact on her daughter, the mother hopes that with Moir imprisoned and a non-harassment order in place for five years, her child can gradually recover and regain a sense of security. Notably, statistics released earlier this year showed a significant rise in reported sexual crimes over the past decade, with an increase in rape and attempted rape cases indicating a concerning trend.
