A man, Eliasard Moneus, aged 29, has been sentenced to 92 years in an Indiana state correctional facility for the cruel act of drowning his three-month-old son, Jacob, in a container filled with laundry detergent. This horrific incident was described as a twisted attempt to teach his wife a lesson. The sentencing included 62 years for the murder of the infant and an additional 30 years for attempting to murder his wife, Edlie, with the sentences to be served consecutively.
An investigation revealed that the baby, Jacob, was found dead in a bucket containing a dark liquid, which turned out to be detergent, after the lid was removed. The autopsy confirmed that the cause of death was asphyxia due to the infant being submerged in the detergent. Tippecanoe County Deputy Prosecutor Elyse Madigan expressed the severity of the crime, stating, “It doesn’t really get worse than this.”
According to reports, Moneus placed his son face down in the detergent-filled bucket, sealed the lid, and left him to drown while consuming a significant amount of detergent. Madigan stated that Moneus aimed to teach his wife and women, in general, a lesson about respect. The prosecutor emphasized that Moneus was determined to make his point, regardless of the consequences.
After pleading guilty to murder, Moneus, who communicates in French Creole, expressed remorse for his actions through an interpreter. Despite his remorse, Judge Steve Meyer condemned Moneus for his heinous crime, highlighting the unfathomable cruelty of the act.
The tragic incident came to light when officers responded to a domestic violence incident involving Moneus’ wife, who had suffered severe injuries inflicted by Moneus. Authorities later found Jacob’s lifeless body in a sealed bucket at the family’s residence after an intense search.
In his sentencing, Judge Meyer reiterated the severity of the crime, emphasizing the unimaginable nature of the act of submerging a helpless infant in a bucket of laundry detergent. The court proceedings shed light on the extreme violence unleashed by Moneus towards his family, leaving a trail of devastation in its wake.
