A crackdown on an illegal streaming platform has disrupted homes previously accessing Sky TV content without paying subscription fees. Following a major police operation in Manchester, four individuals were arrested, and equipment worth £750,000 was confiscated.
The illegal service allegedly provided unauthorized access to premium channels, prompting an investigation initiated by Sky due to suspicious activities. The operation uncovered a large-scale IPTV service catering to millions of users across the UK. One suspect reportedly earned over £3 million from the illicit operation, causing widespread disruption nationwide.
Although viewers utilizing the illegal streams have not been targeted by law enforcement, they will now encounter blocked content on their TVs. Detective Constable Jordan Day from the Police Intellectual Property Crime Unit emphasized the criminal nature of such activities, stating that these operations generate substantial illegal profits and pose risks to consumers, including security threats like malware.
Sky’s Group Director of Anti-Piracy, Matt Hibbert, commended the decisive action taken by the Police Intellectual Property Crime Unit, underscoring Sky’s commitment to safeguarding its content investments. Collaborative efforts with law enforcement and industry partners aim to dismantle criminal networks associated with piracy and protect consumers from security vulnerabilities linked to illegal streaming.
