Health experts have issued a strong caution to individuals who vape, as two new Covid variants, Nimbus and Stratus, are causing a fresh wave of infections throughout the UK.
These new strains have led to a surge in cases in recent weeks, with hospitals reporting an increase in admissions and more people displaying symptoms like sore throats, fatigue, and coughs. Data from the UK Health Security Agency shows 3,049 confirmed Covid cases in the week ending on 1 October, representing a 19% rise from the previous week.
Recent statistics on Covid-related deaths in England indicate an additional 87 fatalities, with 2,077 individuals hospitalized, as reported by Chronicle Live. Health authorities are advising the public to be cautious in crowded spaces and to stay home when feeling unwell. Those who test positive are recommended to self-isolate for five days to prevent further virus transmission.
Keith Rochfort, an Assistant Professor at the School of Biotechnology at Dublin City University, has specifically highlighted the heightened vulnerability of vapers. He explained that vaping exerts additional strain on the lungs, potentially damaging the lung lining and hindering infection resistance.
Rochfort emphasized that vaping and Covid can both trigger inflammation, complicating the body’s ability to heal. The combination of vaping and Covid infection may lead to prolonged recovery periods and lasting lung damage. Marc Effron from Legacy Healing Centre also warned that vaping alongside infection from new Covid variants could impede lung healing and cause persistent respiratory issues.
Medical professionals have noted a resurgence of familiar Covid symptoms and an increase in respiratory problems among individuals with pre-existing lung complications or vaping habits. Effron stressed the importance of giving the lungs a chance to recover by avoiding vaping, particularly during or after a Covid infection.
The UK Health Security Agency has confirmed rapid circulation of the Nimbus and Stratus variants, emphasizing their high transmissibility. Effron advised individuals to refrain from vaping to support their lungs in combating Covid effectively.
Effron urged individuals to cease vaping temporarily if experiencing Covid symptoms or respiratory distress, allowing the lungs space to heal. He emphasized the importance of reducing strain on the lungs amid the spread of new Covid variants.
It is essential to prioritize lung health by avoiding vaping, especially during the Covid pandemic and with the emergence of new variants that pose additional challenges to respiratory well-being.
