A woman was compelled to resign from her job following an incident at the gym that led to a severe spinal ailment. Jess Helling experienced back discomfort after a mishap during a fitness club competition, resulting in multiple hospital visits over eight months. A subsequent MRI scan revealed a “bulging disc,” leading to prescribed pain relief. However, a later scan indicated deterioration, prompting Jess to undergo an epidural procedure at another hospital instead of surgery. While at home, she felt a sudden “pop” when rising from the toilet, which led to her hospitalization and the diagnosis of cauda equina syndrome—a critical condition involving nerve compression in the lower back.
Jess underwent emergency decompression surgery but continues to endure persistent back pain, weakness in her right leg affecting mobility, and issues with bowel and bladder function. Consequently, she had to relinquish her role as an operating department practitioner (ODP) due to these symptoms. Recounting her ordeal, Jess expressed the emotional toll of the situation, highlighting the drastic impact on her life and career aspirations. Seeking justice, she engaged legal experts to investigate potential negligence in the early diagnosis of her condition and facilitate specialized rehabilitation.
On the occasion of Cauda Equina Awareness Day, Jess shared her story to raise awareness about this syndrome. Her legal representative emphasized the urgency of timely intervention for cauda equina cases to mitigate long-term repercussions. Jess, supported by the charity Cauda Equina Champions, organized fundraising events to assist others facing similar challenges. Despite the hardships endured, she remains determined to advocate for awareness and support for individuals affected by cauda equina syndrome. Symptoms of this syndrome include back pain, leg weakness, bladder and bowel dysfunction, and sensory issues around the lower body.
