Former French President Nicolas Sarkozy has commenced serving his five-year prison term following a conviction for accepting millions of euros from the late Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi to finance his 2007 election bid. The 70-year-old, who governed France from 2007 to 2012, is now incarcerated in a nine-square-meter cell at La Santé prison in Paris. This 19th-century facility, known for its dark past and notorious inmates, is currently overcrowded, accommodating 1,243 prisoners in a space designed for 657 individuals.
Sarkozy is reportedly housed in a solitary cell within the isolation wing of the prison for his safety, where he spends most of his time alone with limited outdoor access. His cell is equipped with essential amenities such as a toilet, shower, desk, electric hob, and a television for a monthly fee. Despite the challenging conditions in the isolation wing, Sarkozy is entitled to police protection due to his status as a former head of state.
Recently, a video surfaced online showing an inmate threatening Sarkozy, demanding the return of alleged funds from the Gaddafi era. Sarkozy, who proclaims his innocence, remains under scrutiny in a high-security section of the prison where other high-profile and at-risk inmates are also housed. Despite assertions from Sarkozy’s lawyer that he receives no special treatment, his family members are permitted three weekly visits.
In September, Sarkozy was found guilty of criminal conspiracy related to the alleged funding from Libya during his campaign. He has consistently denied these charges, with his legal team filing an appeal against the conviction. As the legal process unfolds, Sarkozy plans to document his prison experience and engage in reading activities, including the contemplation of writing a book during his incarceration.
