A woman passionate about fitness recently shared her near-death experience with sepsis, which she initially mistook for a pulled muscle from running. Lauren Carson, a 31-year-old financial crime specialist, had been battling a Urinary Tract Infection (UTI) in August. Despite a week of antibiotics, her symptoms persisted, leading to back pain and fever while on vacation in Majorca.
Upon her return home, the severity of the pain left her immobile, prompting her to seek medical help. Doctors diagnosed her with kidney stones resulting from the UTI, which had progressed to septic shock. She was informed that urgent surgery was required to save her life, with only 24 hours left if untreated. Following the successful operation to remove the kidney stones, Lauren spent five days recovering in a Belfast hospital.
Lauren now advocates for greater awareness of UTI complications, emphasizing the importance of taking symptoms seriously and seeking prompt medical attention. Her cautionary tale serves as a reminder to women to address UTIs promptly to prevent life-threatening conditions like sepsis.
