A rapper known for his drill music and the catchphrase “no face, no case” has been convicted of murdering a rival gang member. Lekan Akinsoji and Sundjata Keita, both 27, wore all-black outfits and covered their faces with balaclavas while carrying out the fatal attack on Ahmed Deen-Jah in 2017.
Following a trial at the Old Bailey, both men were found guilty of the murder. Prior to the incident, Akinsoji featured in a rap video titled Armed and Ready, where he rapped about evading capture by concealing his identity. Despite his efforts, Akinsoji was eventually sentenced to 20 years in prison for his involvement in the crime.
The court heard that Deen-Jah was targeted after purchasing a lighter at a local store near Custom House station. The assailants, dressed in black attire and masks, confronted Deen-Jah outside the store and fatally stabbed him during a struggle. The prosecution presented CCTV footage showing the attackers fleeing the scene after the attack.
Prosecutors argued that the murder was a premeditated act rooted in ongoing gang violence in East London. Akinsoji, associated with the Woodgrange gang, denied his involvement in the violence, while Keita, also from Forest Gate, chose not to testify during the trial.
After a majority decision by the jury, both Akinsoji and Keita were found guilty of murder. They have been remanded in custody pending their sentencing scheduled for October 24.
