Andy Palmer, a gym manager, and Andrew Ward, a dedicated gym enthusiast, have developed an unexpected friendship following their survival of cardiac arrests at the gym. Both attribute their lives being saved to the prompt CPR administered by bystanders. They now refer to themselves as the ‘cardiac arrest buddies’ and are committed to raising awareness about the importance of CPR training and the British Heart Foundation’s RevivR tool, which offers quick CPR training in just 15 minutes.
Despite experiencing no symptoms or warning signs prior to their sudden medical emergencies, both men now have a profoundly altered perspective on life. Andy expressed, “Life is fragile and can be taken away unexpectedly – it’s essential to cherish every moment.” Andrew added, “It’s a surreal experience – how can one truly thank those who saved their life? They held my life in their hands, and because of their actions, I’m here today. Just meeting their gaze meant everything to me.”
Andy Palmer, aged 35, was working as an assistant gym manager at a PureGym in Nuneaton on January 29, 2024. Despite a previous echocardiogram revealing an inherited heart condition necessitating a potential pacemaker, Andy was awaiting confirmation from an MRI. On that fateful day, after completing a workout and returning for his shift, Andy suffered a cardiac arrest without any prior warning signs. His memory of the incident remains hazy.
Colleagues swiftly administered CPR, leading to Andy being rushed to the hospital. Following weeks of treatment, he received a pacemaker and eventually resumed work.
Andrew Ward, a national sales manager and avid gym-goer, suffered his cardiac arrest during a spin class at a PureGym in Tamworth on July 7, 2025. Despite having no recollection of the incident, he recalled abruptly collapsing during the class, stating, “My heart stopped midway.”
Witnessing Andrew’s collapse, Andy, who was leading the class, acted swiftly. With the assistance of an off-duty nurse and a police officer nearby, CPR was initiated, and emergency services were alerted promptly.
Andy’s training enabled him to perform CPR effectively, and the off-duty nurse utilized the gym’s defibrillator while waiting for emergency services. Andrew was then transported to Royal Derby Hospital, where it was discovered he had blockages in his arteries and subsequently received stents to address the issue.
Reflecting on the incidents, Andrew and Andy shared an emotional reunion at the gym post-recovery, bonding over their shared traumatic experiences. They now humorously refer to themselves as “cardiac arrest buddies,” emphasizing the value of life and the significance of CPR and defibrillator awareness.
