A new law introduced today in Britain mandates that migrants must achieve an A-level standard in English to be eligible for work. Applicants using specific legal pathways must demonstrate proficiency in speaking, listening, reading, and writing equivalent to A-levels.
To meet this requirement, individuals will need to undergo a Secure English Language Test administered by an approved provider designated by the Home Office. The test results will be a crucial part of their visa application process.
This initiative is part of the tightening of visa regulations outlined in Labour’s Immigration White Paper. Additionally, the time given to international students to secure a graduate-level job after completing their studies will be reduced from two years to 18 months starting in January 2027.
Employers sponsoring skilled foreign workers will face an increase in the Immigration Skills Charge (ISC) from £364 to £480 per person annually for small or charitable organizations, and from £1,000 to £1,320 for medium and large organizations. The funds collected through this charge will be reinvested in training the domestic workforce of the UK.
The Home Office emphasized that this ISC hike, the first since 2017, aims to enhance investment in British workers and lessen reliance on overseas recruitment. The process to implement this charge adjustment will commence later this week.
Furthermore, students seeking entry into the UK will now need to meet elevated financial criteria, set at £1,171 per month outside London for a maximum of nine months.
Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood stated, “It is vital for migrants to integrate and contribute to our society by learning the English language. Those coming to our country must make an effort to engage and participate in our national life.”
Beginning January 8, 2026, the English language standard for Skilled Worker, High Potential Individual (HPI), and Scale-up visa routes will be raised from B1 to B2 level. Similar language requirements will be introduced for other routes, including dependents, in the near future, as per the Home Office’s announcement.
Moreover, the HPI route, tailored for graduates from the top 100 international universities, will be expanded to attract highly skilled individuals to the UK as part of the government’s strategic recruitment efforts.
