Ricky Hatton was reportedly in good spirits during a family visit shortly before his demise, according to testimony at a Coroner’s Court session held on Thursday. The inquiry, overseen by Alison Mutch at the South Manchester Coroner’s Court in Stockport, identified ‘hanging’ as the preliminary cause of death, with a comprehensive inquest scheduled for March 20, 2026.
Paul Speak, Hatton’s manager and long-time companion, discovered the former boxer unresponsive at his residence in Gee Cross, Hyde, on September 14. Hatton and Speak were planning to depart for Dubai from Manchester Airport.
Greater Manchester Police confirmed Hatton’s passing and stated that there were no suspicious circumstances surrounding his death. The case was subsequently referred to the coroner for further investigation.
Reports from the hearing revealed that Hatton was seen by family members looking well two days before his passing but failed to attend a scheduled event the following day. Speak, recalling the incident, expressed surprise at finding Hatton unresponsive and promptly alerted the authorities.
Following Hatton’s funeral at Manchester Cathedral, his funeral procession made poignant stops at locations significant to the late boxer, including the unveiling of a tribute mural and floral displays. The procession, led by a yellow Reliant Robin, passed through various landmarks before arriving at the cathedral, where a multitude of mourners paid their respects.
Notable figures from the boxing world and beyond, such as Tyson Fury, Liam Gallagher, and Wayne Rooney, attended the service, offering tributes to the boxing legend. Eulogies were read, emphasizing Hatton’s impact as both a sporting icon and a symbol of working-class pride.
The procession concluded at the Etihad Stadium, the home of Manchester City, before a private committal attended exclusively by family members. For those in need of support, the Samaritans offer a 24/7 helpline at 116 123 or the option to contact them via email or visit their local branch.
