An NHS doctor is addressing a misconception about booking appointments that many people experience. Known as the ‘8am scramble,’ this rush occurs when GP practices open their phone lines for same-day consultations, a process that can be challenging due to the increasing population and varying health concerns. A recent Care Quality Commission report highlighted a significant increase in patients waiting over two weeks for GP appointments, rising from 4.2 million in February 2020 to 5 million in March 2024.
Despite complaints about empty waiting rooms, GP Dr. Sophie explained that doctors are actively working behind the scenes, handling tasks like home visits, triage, prescriptions, referrals, and tests. She emphasized that the appearance of inactivity is misleading, as doctors manage a range of responsibilities to ensure efficient patient care.

The report underscores the dedication of GP teams, who delivered 383.3 million appointments in the last 12 months, representing a substantial increase in healthcare services compared to pre-pandemic levels.
