At the age of 21, John Kemper Hutcherson faced a life-altering moment that resulted in the tragic death of his best friend in a horrific car accident.
In August 2004, on an early Sunday morning, 21-year-old Josh decided to drive under the influence of alcohol with his close friend, Francis Daniel Brohm, as his passenger. The two had been socializing at a pub with friends prior to the incident.
During their journey home in Marietta, Georgia, Francis began feeling unwell and leaned out of the moving car for fresh air. Tragedy struck when John lost control of the vehicle, colliding with a telephone pole support wire, leading to the decapitation of his friend.
Rather shockingly, John continued driving for 12 miles to his suburban home without stopping or seeking help. He chose to sleep in his blood-stained clothes, leaving Francis’s headless body in his truck. Authorities were only alerted to the situation when a neighbor discovered the grim scene the following morning.
Upon police investigation, it was revealed that John was remorseful for his actions, although foul play was not suspected. His family and friends, particularly Francis’s relatives, were devastated by the tragic loss, seeking solace and understanding during this difficult time.
Following the fatal accident, John was arrested in Georgia on a $100,000 bond, which was later reduced to $50,000 after appeals from the victim’s family. District Attorney Pat Head emphasized the decision was in line with similar cases of vehicular homicide, considering factors like flight risk and witness intimidation. The victim’s family expressed a desire for John to receive necessary treatment and rebuild his life rather than be incarcerated.
