Two inmates, Rashid Gedel and Samuel Dodsworth, are facing murder charges in connection with the death of former Lostprophets frontman Ian Watkins at HMP Wakefield. During their initial Crown Court appearance, Dodsworth appeared via video link from the prison, while Gedel chose not to attend remotely. No bail applications were made during the hearing, and both defendants were remanded in custody until their next court date on November 12 for plea and trial preparation. The trial date was tentatively set for May 5, with the proceedings expected to last two to three weeks. Police confirmed that Gedel identifies as having a black background, while Dodsworth identifies as white British.
Ian Watkins, who was serving a 29-year sentence for child sex offenses, was found dead at the prison. Watkins had been involved in various criminal activities, including the attempted rape of a fan’s baby, leading to his lengthy imprisonment. He had previously been attacked in 2023 but survived with non-life-threatening injuries. Additionally, Watkins had faced further legal issues for possessing a mobile phone in prison, resulting in an extended sentence. Despite his attempts to appeal his initial jail term, Watkins was unsuccessful in reducing the length of his sentence.
